What Is A Cold Wallet?

A cold wallet is a minimalistic device, and it only stores keys and signs transactions, nothing more. Cold storages have a design similar to USB devices (and sometimes calculators). Cold wallets are much more secure than hot wallets but not because of complex futuristic technologies; in fact, it’s quite the opposite. These wallets operate offline and are so ‘dumb’ that they make it impossible for hackers to attack or infiltrate them because it almost has no difference from trying to hack a rock. Also, keep in mind that these wallets tend to be pricey!

Ledger Nano X

This offline wallet is effortless to set up and, therefore, a beginner-friendly option. Ledger Nano X supports over 1000 coins and tokens and can be operated from your PC or via its mobile app. This wallet’s code isn’t open-source, meaning it’s not available for community members to review and check how secure it is. Ledger Nano X costs about $177.

Trezor One

Trezor One is less pricey than Ledger Nano X and is an open-source offline wallet with support for many assets. However, it doesn’t support the following assets: Monero (XMR), Ripple (XRP), and EOS. The price of Trezor One is $59.

Trezor Model T

Trezor Model T is another easy to set up wallet for beginners with support for 1816 crypto assets along with the assets that aren’t supported by Trezor One. It is an air-gapped wallet, but you need to plug it into your PC or phone with a USB-C connector to use it. Trezor Model T has a touch screen, supports micro SD cards, and costs $190.

Trezor Integration With Exodus

Both of these Trezor wallets have integration with the hot wallet Exodus. Exodus is one of the best hot wallets regarding security, design and ease of use. This integration provides Trezor users with the option to use their cryptocurrencies securely from their Trezor hardware wallets in Exodus.

ColdCard

ColdCard is probably the most secure hardware wallet. It has many security options all in one place and is the best option for security-obsessives: duress pin, brick me pin, even random dice rolls for generating random seed words! However, not to kill your vibe, ColdCard is a Bitcoin-only wallet. ColdCard is a completely air-gapped wallet, and you can manage your Bitcoins by just plugging your wallet into a power bank or power adapter. Also, all code for this device is completely open-source. But bear in mind that this wallet isn’t as easy to use because of all the security features it offers. ColdCard costs $120.

Ellipal Titan

Ellipal Titan is a fully air-gapped wallet and is dust and waterjet proof. Not only this but if someone tries to physically open your wallet and a breach is detected, your keys would be deleted immediately. In other words, the Ellipal Titan protects itself against physical attacks. Ellipal Titan relies on QR codes for data transfers, and it supports more than 7000 crypto assets. It is also made possible to stake, exchange and buy crypto assets via Ellipal Titan. This wallet costs $140.

Final Remarks

Hardware wallets are the most secure places to store your crypto assets. They operate offline and are rendered useless doing anything else other than storing crypto.
